Deepali Sakhare presently runs a home decor and lifestyle store called ‘Apartment Therapy’ in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. Here she retails home decor products and customised furniture made using home grown eco-concepts. After working in the corporate world and having handled both national and international brands, she wished to do something more enriching and inspiring, promoting eco-friendly art, craft and products seemed just right.
She traveled to Auroville (Puducherry) to understand their ‘sustainable way of living model’ and came back refreshed and inspired. ‘Apartment Therapy’ was born and she started learning more about re-cycling waste and scrap and experimenting the same. While she was learning about re-cyling waste, she thought it was extremely important to propogate this concept with young minds as well and this led her to initiate eco-craft classes. Here the participants learn to make Dinosaurs from plastic bottles, up-cycle bottle lids to make wall clocks, use old cd’s to make table clocks, strings to make lanterns and weave old newspapers and magazines to make beautiful baskets and much more.
She always makes it a point to teach them to make a paper bag first, so that they may replace the use of plastic completely at least in their day to day affairs!
From amongst her many eco-friendly products we showcase three of them here.
Newspaper Baskets
Old newspapers and magazines get transformed into multi-purpose baskets using glue, paint and a simple technique.
String Lamps
These are made using a bunch of different strings and glue, flour, water and a balloon. The final product can be coloured to suit one’s taste.
Rope And Bottle Vases
Used wine bottles headed for the trash can get transformed into charming vases with the help of jute string or scraps of wool.
