I completed my Master of Arts in Interior Design from Bournemouth University, UK and also did a specialization in lighting design and a Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design from New York School Of Interior Design, NY, USA.
I was fortunate to have worked with renowned architects in Mumbai, London and New York City and with clients who fanned my creative light. After coming back to India in 2011, I set up Gesamt Design, a boutique-style design studio based in Mumbai.
As a design principle, I believe that space and objects are crafted with the perceptible human energy. With exploration and research in the interrelated fields of design and profound interest in philosophy, I aim at expanding the scope of every design program.
Every design whether of a product, light or space is created as an experience to arouse an emotion. Gesamt Design portfolio encompasses a wide range of interior projects including retail, commercial and small and large residential projects. The practice also specializes in lighting consultancy and customized sculptural pieces of work.
I believe integral to any creation is the interaction between the aspirant and piece, thereby arousing an emotion whilst experiencing the piece. The aesthetic sensibility lies in allowing the concept to define itself in terms of materiality and structure. This makes each design process interdisciplinary and a true learning endeavour.
When it comes to designing, my educational experience taught me the intricate research process behind every design. The knowledge of what’s out there and how one reaches there, allows one to truly define new “boxes” rather than just trying to think outside of one.
April 2013 is a very special month for me since I travel to Milan for the prestigious Salone Satellite exhibit. The Salone is a global convention of some of the most creative design minds of the world. And my participation in the Salone happens to be uber special since out of 6,50,000 entries only 700 are shortlisted for the showcase and I am one of the only two Indians to make it.
I am showcasing 2 of my pieces, the Mandala & the Mansara at The Satellite which has over the years, since its inception in 1998, become an unparalleled observatory of young international creativity.
Mansara is a special cage creating a poetic dialogue between the inhabitant and the onlooker. There is a subtle layering of crafted materials which portrays an ethereal aesthetic also allowing a sensuous flow along with intriguing entry points into the inner realm of the cage.
Within the inner realm, the rhythm of the bird is captured in a plastic expression centrifugal to the piece flanked by functional drawers on either sides unified by the metal and glass enclosure.
The inspiration for this particular piece was the parrot cages as defined in the book “Indian Architecture” according to Mansara series. It speaks about how cages should be designed in a particular fashion to bring good luck and prosperity.
Mandala, a light installation explores the territories of photography, optics and light to create a fixture infusing a profane space into the scared realm. There is an artistic transmutation of the outside capturedas muted reflections within, and the secret inner force radiating out creating a metaphysical aura.
This balance of the magical evolution of patterns and the involution of the centrifugal force leads the aspirant into self-transcendence: a total experience of the “ONE”.
You can see that I draw inspiration from texts, stories and quotes, words that motivate me. I then translate them into three dimensions through hand play with materials and model making. This is then followed by a structured process involving research that helps me translate them into formulated designs.
Always one to cherish memories, I fondly remember one of my New York clients telling me that the sensitivities I possess as an individual are reflected in my work, to know my work is to know me.
As a Furniture Artist, Light Consultant and an Interior Designer I thrive on creating an intuitive understanding of an inspired thought and always desire to express the same without any sole visual inference. I hope to create a niche in the design field where I wish to practice with my design philosophy.
