In religious terms, Designquest would be considered one of the favourite apostles of the design Gods. Encouraging its participants to open their minds, the final round of Season 3 was held at the Dutch Design Workspace in Mumbai on the 13th of October 2012.
The five lucky finalist – Akansha Rajhans (a product designer from Pune), Anurag Sarda (an industrial and user interface designer from Hyderabad), Somdutt Sarkar (an Ahmedabad based textile/graphic designer), Swarup Mayalil (a furniture designer from Bangalore) and Arpit Agarwal (a pioneer of Bamboo craft from Assam) were flown to the Netherlands where they ate, slept and breathed design at the Dutch Design Week.
The famous five journeyed through different exhibits like Food Culture, that encouraged changes in eating choices in order to build a sustainable future. They got to meet the likes of Tjeerd Veenhoven, the developer of a new material called Palm leather, interestingly produced in Tamil Nadu and also visited studios like that of product designer Pepe Hey Koop, whose leather pieces have been made in collaboration with Tiny Miracles Foundation, an NGO in Mumbai.
The winners also attended the Student Graduation Show organised by the Design Academy in Eindhoven, where they got to witness 139 individual perspectives by young designers, aimed at transforming a shared future.
Post Dutch Design Week, the winners moved on to take in the sights and sounds of Amsterdam. Here they visited the trend setting CitizenM hotel, a material library which contained over 1500 material samples and the iconic Mooi Gallery. But in the end, it was Amsterdam’s Central Station that caught their attention, as its nearby floating structures built to park 3000 bicycles (alleviating parking problems) was something that all five felt was an innovative way of thinking that needed to be replicated back home!
